Turning Hardship into Purpose
At Community Choice Foundation, we recognize students who transform adversity into motivation—those who use their personal experiences as fuel to create a brighter future for others. This year, we proudly award our scholarship to Max Deshazor from Jackson, whose resilience, dedication, and passion for justice set him apart.
From a young age, Max understood the profound impact of a good lawyer. Facing instability within his own family, legal advocacy helped him find security. That experience shaped his lifelong goal: to pursue law and specialize in family law, ensuring others receive the same opportunity for safety and justice that he once did.
His dream has always been to attend Michigan State University, and he took an unconventional path to make it happen. Understanding the financial burden of higher education, he made a deal with his parents—taking a “13th” year to earn both his high school diploma and an associate degree, allowing him to transfer credits and lessen the cost of his four-year degree. With a 3.7 high school GPA and a 3.4 community college GPA, his determination shines through in both academics and his strategic approach to achieving his dreams.
Despite balancing work and school, Max has never hesitated to give back. He volunteers with the Jackson Food Pantry and the Interfaith Shelter, demonstrating his commitment to serving those in need. He believes deeply in the power of community and in lifting others up whenever possible.
We are honored to support this future attorney, knowing that Max’s impact will reach far beyond himself. His story is one of perseverance, selflessness, and an unwavering commitment to justice.
