A Good Kind of Different

The Detroit Free Press has awarded Community Choice with a 2020 Top Workplace Award. For the most part, the award is determined through employee responses to an in-depth, anonymous survey that assesses our opinion of being a team member at Community Choice.

A key portion of the survey focuses on the culture of Community Choice. In total, 78% of our team members provided overwhelmingly positive feedback that resulted in receiving this award.

According to the Free Press, 2,707 employers in the region were nominated for the award and their employees were invited to take the survey. Employers could be public, private, nonprofit, or governmental. There was no cost to enter the program.

Detroit Free Press 2020 Top Work PlacesThis is an award we’ve won eight straight years, yet every time we’re notified there is a buzz, a sense of pride, that radiates throughout the entire credit union.

And “pride” is the best way to describe this honor. The fact that team members feel so good about their working environment that they would rate it so highly − on a survey that no one in management sees − tells you something about the culture at Community Choice.

What do we love about working at Community Choice?

From management to first-year, part-time team members, there is a sense that everyone’s opinion matters because communication is key at Community Choice. And the last 8 months have proved that our culture is strong as we’ve maintained our sense of “team” and “community,” even though many of us have been working from home.

Although we’re a diverse team, who each bring special talents and skillset, the unifying trait all team members have is our desire to help others. Working for an organization committed to helping our members and team members enhances the sense of purpose we feel in our work; it’s rewarding.

There’s nothing like that feeling that comes at the end of the day when we know we’ve helped someone. It’s the relief we see in the faces of our members when we know that we’ve help them find the perfect solution to their situation that makes what we do at Community Choice a passion, not just a paycheck.

When we hear from a business member that we made it possible for them to meet payroll simply because we returned an urgent phone call promptly and said, “yes, we can help,” it makes it easy to go to work each and every day.

We work hard to help our members, but there’s a good deal of fun to be had, too.

Though 2020 put a cramp in our style as far as the big events go – a typical year includes a Halloween party complete with a code of secrecy and a momentous reveal and a holiday party that truly reinforces the word “team” − the smaller celebrations have become even more special.

You simply can’t help but smile when a gift card mysteriously appears in your email that says, “nice work” or the “cheers” in your email thanking you for a kind word in passing. Those are the best kinds of surprises, and that’s what created our work culture many years ago and why we are determined to not just maintain it, but to continually improve upon it.

There are a lot of memes and signs people print out and hang above their desks that describe top companies. This one defines the sentiment many of us feel, “Don’t pick a job with great vacation time, pick one that doesn’t need escaping.”

That’s what happens when you work at an organization that routinely wins awards for Top Workplace.

The best way to describe the Community Choice work culture is spelled out in our recruitment brand, we are and look for team members who are “The Good Kind of Different.”
