How to Avoid Holiday Scams

Scammers are always finding new ways to try to take advantage of you. But staying protected doesn’t have to be complicated. Knowing the warning signs and what to do if something feels off can help you stay one step ahead. Here’s a quick, easy guide to spotting common scams and keeping your money safe.

A woman looks at her phone, worried about finances.

“Would you like to make a donation to help the needy this holiday season?”

Scammers may pose as legitimate charities and reach out by phone, social media, or even in person. They often pressure you to give right away or use emotional stories to create urgency. In some cases, especially with in-person requests, they may even try to change the donation amount without you realizing it.

Before you give, take a moment to confirm the organization is legitimate using a trusted charity evaluation site. And if you’re donating in person, always review the amount on the screen before you approve. It’s a simple step that helps keep giving safe and stress-free.

“Your card has been compromised. We need your card info to investigate.”

Scammers sometimes pose as Community Choice team members and reach out by phone with urgent claims about suspicious activity on your card. They may offer to “take care of it” by sending a courier to your home and asking for your card to run tests. Once they have it, they can quickly access your funds.

Because we value your money as much as you do, Community Choice may reach out to you if we suspect fraudulent activity. We will never ask you for any login information via phone, email, or mail, and we will never send a courier to pick up your card. Always verify any calls you receive from Community Choice, and if it sounds suspicious, get their name and number and say you’ll call them back. Then call us to verify the information.

During the busy holiday shopping season, scammers often lure shoppers with too-good-to-be-true deals on fake websites or through social media ads. These sites may look like they belong to a real business or seller, but the items you pay for never arrive. In some cases, the checkout process itself is a scam, putting both your money and personal information at risk.

Never enter any personal or payment information before you thoroughly check the business out online. See what comes up on search engines, look at reviews, and check if they have a listing with the Better Business Bureau. Searching the name of the business or product with the word “scam” can often bring up any red flags.

Protecting yourself against scams is easier than you think.

At least, it is with Community Choice! Below are some additional steps you can take to safeguard your money this holiday season, and all year round!
