Volunteer of the Quarter: Steve Thompson

Steve Thompson has always felt at home near the water. Growing up on lakes and later working on the Great Lakes, he developed a deep appreciation for Michigan’s natural beauty. Now, as a dedicated volunteer at Muskegon Lake Nature Preserve, Steve is committed to preserving that beauty for future generations. His passion for restoration and outdoor education has made a lasting impact on the community, ensuring that families and children have a safe, welcoming place to explore nature.

As head of the maintenance committee, Steve plays a hands-on role in keeping the Preserve in top condition. Whether repairing the wood boardwalk, cleaning trails, or maintaining the education pavilion, he and his team work to create a space where people can connect with nature. “It’s important for us to make sure the children and families that visit and learn about the Preserve feel like they are in a safe, clean, and welcoming place,” he says.

A personal commitment to giving back

Steve’s commitment to giving back led him to join the Community Choice Credit Union Member Volunteer Program after seeing it online. For him, the connection between local businesses and community service is vital. “It’s nice to have businesses in the community that support volunteers. My wife and I focus on helping our community, and any business that supports Muskegon, we will go out of our way to support too. Community Choice is one of those businesses.”

Community Choice members for about a year, Steve and his wife appreciate the convenience of their local branch. But beyond banking, he values the credit union’s commitment to service, a mission that aligns with his own passion for conservation.

A legacy for the future

Steve believes strongly in getting young people outdoors and fostering a love for nature early on. “Anything I can do to get young people outdoors, to me, is very important work. Restoration and preservation are close to my heart, and I want young people to feel the same. I want our communities clean, and I want to leave the area better than I found it.”

Through his volunteer efforts, Steve is doing just that – ensuring that Muskegon Lake Nature Reserve remains a place where people can experience the beauty of Michigan’s landscapes for years to come.

Steve’s dedication and participation in the Community Choice Credit Union Member Volunteer Program resulted in a $1,000 donation to the Muskegon Lake Nature Preserve in his honor.
