Meet Ida Akoto-Wiafe

2025 Scholarship Recipient

One of 26 awarded a Community Choice scholarship for leading with purpose.

A Journey of Dedication and Achievement

Born and raised in Ghana, Ida Akoto-Wiafe moved to Westland at age 13, joining her parents, who won a lottery years earlier to immigrate. She quickly adapted to her new life, excelling in school and discovering a passion for medical science. Fascinated by pharmaceuticals, she developed a keen interest in their composition and impact on the body.

Now a conditional PhD candidate in Pharmacy at Wayne State University (WSU), Ida chose the program for its top-tier reputation and proximity to family. Fluent in Mandarin, she hopes to study abroad in China to explore the integration of traditional and modern medicine, using that knowledge to improve healthcare in the U.S. and African countries—particularly Ghana and Madagascar.

Beyond academics, Ida is deeply committed to service. From supporting veterans and the homeless to contributing as an artist for Ocean Busters, a student-led ocean conservation initiative, her dedication to volunteer work is remarkable. She also records books for Vocal ID, providing voices for individuals with hearing impairments, and helps care for her autistic younger brother, fueling her passion for autism advocacy.

The Community Choice Foundation is honored to support Ida in her PhD journey and looks forward to the tremendous impact she will make for years to come.
