Actually, we never left. But we feel like shouting, “we’re back!”
Give Big Month kicked off on Sept. 1. Give Big Month is 30 days of committing our time and various talents to help our communities. It is 30 days of Giving Back and Giving Big.
Last year, many of our charitable efforts were virtual, and our team members still totaled an amazing 1,682 hours of volunteer work during October (yep, everything about 2020 was different, even the month dedicated to giving big).
This year, we’re back to September and using the resources and knowledge we gained from 2020 — a year in which we mainly gave back to our communities while standing 6 feet apart or through our computer screens — to make this Give Big Month even more impactful.
What did we learn in 2020?
We learned that we could help teach kids to read virtually. We learned that we could make blankets at home for donation to the Linus Project and bring a smile to the face of a child in need. We were reminded that writing a letter or calling a lonely senior can make a life-changing impact.
And the list goes on and on.
Those things are still important to us and are still part of our commitment, but this year there are more opportunities for us to be back out in our communities, and we look forward to laughing, smiling – just connecting with those we have the opportunity to help.
We’ll be helping to distribute food in Royal Oak and Walking to End Alzheimer’s in Jackson. We’ll be cleaning up local parks and neighborhoods, and volunteering with Michigan Humane Society. We'll be at Macomb Foster Closet’s Mom2Mom sale helping in any way they need us. We’ll be sorting and packing food for Gleaners, Forgotten Harvest and a number of other local food banks. In short, we plan to be inyour community — in person — this year, and we can’t wait.
Volunteerism is something we feel strongly about. Those who work for, and with, credit unions know that commitment to community and to helping others are two of the cornerstones of our industry. It is part of the service credit unions offer, and it sets us apart from other financial institutions.
If you see us out in your community wearing one of our Give Big shirts, be sure to say hello.
We can’t wait to get back into your communities to Give Big. See you around town.
