If you’re a member at Community Choice and spend any time on our website or in our member centers you’ve probably also heard of our Community Choice Foundation. During scholarship time, it’s hard to miss because we shout it from the rooftops that $100,000 is available each year in scholarships to deserving students/professionals thanks to the Foundation.

But the Foundation isn’t just a name or group of board members. It’s so much more. It doesn’t pay rent on fancy office space or hand out salaries. On the contrary. The Foundation is hopes and dreams. It’s an open door for students with great ambitions and a desire to “Give Big.”

It’s Sheridan, of Linden. She and her sibling started their own non-profit to help homeless individuals stay warm. She devotes about 20 hours per week to the initiative and is studying for a career in forensic psychology.

It's also Megan, of Zeeland. Megan said, “volunteering keeps me busy but makes me happy.” Initially seeking to become a nurse, she was inspired to change her focus to teaching on a church mission trip where she had an opportunity to work with children.

It’s 25 scholarships −15 for high school seniors, 6 for bright students in pursuit of continuing education, and 4 for hard-working Michigan residents who are interested in skilled trades training. It’s $100,000 in scholarships each year. And to make sure our scholarship program, which now exceeds $1.2 million over the past 12 years, remains viable for years to come, we need your support.

Out of Many One graphicThis year, we’re asking our members to join us in supporting students and donate $1.00 Yep, that’s it. One dollar. You probably have more than that in the cupholder of your car or sitting at the bottom of your purse in change. If our more than 106,000 members gave $1.00, we’d reach our fundraising goal of $100,000. Of course, we love it when you give more, because we realize not all of our members can help us.

In 2020, your dollars helped Julia, a senior from Wyandotte, to continue her dream of becoming a neonatal nurse practitioner. It supported Timothy, from Flint, who continued his mechanical engineering degree. He has a passion for renewable energy and wants to put that education to good use.

Helping students is easy. You can even do it as you shop when you link your Kroger card to the Foundation. You can also use Amazon Smile. All of the instructions to link your shopping accounts can be found here. Just click on the Support while you Shop button. If you’re not a member but would like to donate to the Foundation, you can do so at Network for Good.

Many of our generous members had a habit of dropping $1.00 in the giving bowls in our lobbies. We realize that many of you are doing your banking remotely these days, and we thank you for staying safe and helping our team members stay safe. There’s a convenient and safe way to make a donation right through your e-Banking. There’s an easy-to-follow video of these instructions on our website. Click here for more.

If you do decide to make a donation, how about $1.00 for each of your children (nieces, nephews, grandkids), and then add $1.00 for the nice young person who delivers your groceries (they’re working two jobs to pay for tuition), the receptionist at your doctor’s office who always has a smile (she’s thinking of becoming a nurse but can’t afford her last semester of college) and your neighbor’s child (who shovels your snow just to be neighborly and who dreams of becoming a doctor one day).

That’s the Community Choice Foundation in action.
