Family time, family decisions

Use your at-home spring break to make important decisions, then have some fun.
Which comes first, spring break or spring fever?

While you may be putting your family’s annual pilgrimage to the sun on hold for one more year, there’s still plenty to do right in your own backyard.

Get the family together and make a plan

Having the family home together with no distractions is a perfect time to make important decisions. If you’re considering making home renovations once the weather breaks, why not get everyone involved. After all, changing the house affects everyone. This family project might only take a few hours but getting started takes planning and input.

Thinking of adding a pool? Where’s the perfect spot for afternoon sun, and if you had to decide between a fun waterslide or a relaxing hot tub, which choice suits the family best?

How about upgrades to the backyard. Is this the year you add a playscape for the kids. Maybe the kids should decide what they want and where they’d like it.

You might be surprised how much the family will love being a part of these projects. What youngster wouldn’t love a chance to help design their new play area? What teen doesn’t want a say in what the pool will look like?

Renovation projects like these will add to the overall value of your home, and more importantly, add to the enjoyment your family has making memories in your home.

RVOk. That’s Day 1 of spring break. Then what? Let the adventure begin.
Did someone say Michigan State Parks?

We are so lucky to have access to so many beautiful state parks in Michigan, so consider them when you’re making plans; several have specific spring break events. From hiking to biking and from camping to day camps, the state parks have something for everyone. And they’re open year-round. Click here to find a park and activity near you.

Not warm enough yet?

There is some good family fun to be had indoors too.

  • Legoland Discovery Center and the Michigan Sea Life Aquarium, which features 5,000 sea creatures, are ready to delight the family. There are fees for both activities. Click here for rates and restrictions.
  • Some indoor waterparks are open, but it’s best to call ahead or check their websites as things can change rapidly.
  • Looking for an educational outing? Click here for a list of local museums that are sure to delight.
  • Here’s a great in-home activity for the entire family. Take a family cooking class. There are several local businesses that specialize in cooking classes (remote and in person). Just Google cooking classes in Michigan. You’ll be baking bread and making pasta in no time. Talk about a skill that will last a lifetime.
Hit the slopes

If the snow is still around, and it likely will be, go skiing. Did you know that there are 40 ski resorts in Michigan alone.

Make this the year for adventure

If this is the year for that new camper or RV, start looking now so you can get the most out of your spring and summer. It’s still a bit cold now and the trees may be bare, but soon spring will be in the air and everyone will have the same idea. So shop now and beat the crowds.

Again, take the family with you when you shop. Consider their requests so everyone will look forward to the adventure that lies ahead.

How nice would it be to know that your next vacation is sitting right in your driveway waiting for you to pick the destination. No reservations. No waiting. No crowds or long lines. All you need to do is pack.Maybe next spring break you will be able to load up the family and head for the sunshine.

Until then, use this time to consider everyone’s needs and wants, or wish list and reality, and do some preliminary shopping to see what your options are. Then sneak in some family fun. What a great way to spend spring break.

If you’re considering major home upgrades, use the equity in your home to finance your project with a Home Equity Loan or Line of Credit. Through June 30, 2021, we’ll even pay your closing costs.
